The year of throwing yourself into casebooks and outlines with no guarantee of passing with a high grade. The year where they weed out the weak and social lives vanish. Though law school is a lot of work, the 1Ls at Brooklyn Law seem to have a handle on themselves. Now that October as arrived, the BLS Advocate decided to conduct a survey to see what really goes on in the minds of 1Ls.
No really, I chose to go from paralegal to lawyer to open more avenues and career possibilities.
I saw my friends attending and thought I was truly missing out. I also want to work for the government and
Dating a 1l law students teach at an undergraduate or graduate level. I told him I would get my life together and stop this endless charade of drinking and whoring around. We made a deal that if I could finish law school without messing up, he would leave the company to me. So why am I here?
To make my father proud. I want to hopefully secure a position that allows me to have a hand in international law. But visiting the school beforehand and seeing the campus really did it for me. The school fit with the life style I wanted to live. I had it narrowed down 2 schools and got into both. I was leaning toward BLS when they offered a larger scholarship than the other Dating a 1l law students I was considering, so that sealed the deal. I figured a small law school would really bring around the whole idea of misery loves company.
Also, through working I became friends with famous Brooklyn alum who taught crime here for 20 years and who is now one of the most respected criminal attorneys in New York City, he convinced me to go here. My heart was telling me this is my time.
Upon graduating, I went straight to law school -no time to waste. I worked in a criminal defense firm during that time and it helped me prepare for school and convince myself that I really wanted to do it.

I think most of us will want to do at least one. While summer internships are at the back of my mind, my top priority is literally getting through the semester and doing well

It seems to be par for the course. I fully expected to jump in with both feet and go deep. Law school is supposed to be competitive. Date on your own terms. But I was also told by a good friend at NYU law that you MUST have life in law school or you will not survive… so I think a stable dating relationship should be encouraged… the flings that we can get caught up with are where the problems lie. Must be looking for a different type of relationship. There would certainly be a mutual interest in getting work done in a timely manner, plus the added bonus of having a built in person to take needed breaks with.
Maybe try to avoid dating someone in your group or have classes with. I also find making time for things I enjoy such as hanging out with friends or working out help my stress levels. Reading cases takes far longer than I anticipated and it becomes a marathon of referencing the Law Dictionary or the FRCP every other second which can turn into a six-hour assignment.
But then again, how will that be any different from undergrad? Studying is the same. Exam stress is the same. Just try to learn and get better everyday. I hardly know how to respond. But I bet these horrors will get worse during Halloween.
You got this far; you will keep going as long as you choose to. Especially since in New York there is so much competition. Also…what if I get the flu during finals! These responses show just how diverse and complex each student at BLS truly is.
